Born in Rhine, a province of Bavaria, he was apprentice to the trade of designing and building furniture. In 1882, at the age of 17, he came to America going first to Cincinnati. He then moved to Canal Dover where he obtained work in a furniture factory. Several years later he organized a retail furniture firm in Zanesville. Early in 1888, he came to Canton and purchased the Undertaking and furniture establishment owned by the Shearer Bros. Eleven years later, with H.D. McCrea, he formed the Canton Home Furnishing Co. After 12 years, Mr. Arnold sold out his interest in the furniture business and established the Arnold Funeral Home.
Mr. Arnold was one of the organizers of the Citizen's Building & Loan Company, now First Merit Bank.
J.L. served as both president and secretary on the Ohio State Board of Embalming Examiners, receiving appointments from three governors. He was a member of the Canton Board of Health and one of the original organizers of the Canton Chamber of Commerce.
He was a 32nd degree mason and his affiliations included McKinley Lodge #431 F&AM, Knights Templar, Scottish Rite, Nazir Grotto, Al Koran Shrine, and the Masonic Veterans Association. Other memberships included National Funeral Directors Association, Ohio Funeral Directors Association and First United Church of Christ. He was a charter member of Congress Lake Club and held a life membership in Canton Lodge of Elk's.
Born in Canton, he graduated from Canton School's and joined his father J.L. Arnold in the Funeral Home.
At the outbreak of WWI he was one of the first residents of Canton to enlist. He became Sergeant of the 330th Infantry and later the 332nd Infantry of the 83rd division. He served two years, one year in this country, and another year overseas. He saw active duty in France when the armistice was signed.
Carl served as President of the Funeral Home from 1941 until his death in 1961. Professional memberships included National Funeral Directors Association, Ohio Funeral Directors Association and National Selected Morticians.
He was a member of first United Church of Christ, McKinley Lodge #431 F&AM Scottish Rite, York Rite, charter member Nazir Grotto, Tadmor Shrine, charter member of Post 44 American Legion where he served as president in 1927, Floyd Hughes Post VFW and "The Lion of St. Mark," composed of 12 sergeants of the 332nd Inf, Div., who met regularly after founding their group in France during WWI as a last man's club. Other memberships included Canton Lodge of Elks, Nimislla Lodge I.O.O.F., Canton Exchange Club and Sippo Lake Club.
Born in Canton, he graduated from Blair Academy at Blairstown, N.J. in 1912, and went to Jamaica where for three years he looked after the Arnold-Morrow Bee Co. A company founded by his father, J.L. Arnold, and by Dr. E.O. Morrow.
Returning to Canton in 1916, he joined the Arnold Funeral Home as Secretary Treasurer. "Pete" was a well known competitive golfer and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of First United Church of Christ, McKinley Lodge #431 F&AM, Nazir Grotto, Scottish Rite, Canton Rotary Club, YMCA, and Loyal Order of Moose. Other memberships included Congress Lake Club, Oakwood Country Club, National Travel Club, National Funeral Directors Association, Ohio Embalmers Association, and Game Reserve Association.
Born in Canton to Carl P. and Lola M. Arnold, he graduated from Lehman High School and Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, He was a surgical technician in the Army during the Korean Conflict and became president of the Arnold Funeral Home in 1961. He was past president of Canton Rotary and District 16 Ohio Funeral Directors Association, and served on the board of the Canton Automobile Club. He was a member and was a Deacon at First United Church of Christ. Memberships included National Selected Morticians, National Funeral Directors Association, McKinley Lodge #431 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Canton, Tadmor Temple, Shrine Luncheon Club, the American Legion, Congres Lake Club, The Canton Club, Canton Jaycees, and Oakwood Country Club.
John C. and his wife Mary had 5 children, Lynda, Elizabeth, Nancy, Joan, and John L. Arnold.
John C. Arnold's accomplishments included building and opening the new 10,000 square foot mortuary at 1517 Market Ave., N in 1989. The business had been in a smaller castle-like building at 817 Market Ave., N.
